have found several articles and websites that state that some 7 million illegals pay into the Social Security program by using “fake” social security numbers. And that the amount that is collected from them is some $7 billion a year that they will never be able to collect on. So that is $7 Billion a year that the government gets for Social Security that they could use to pay other beneficiaries or add to a needed surplus in the program. But they don’t. That money is set aside in an Earnings Suspense File, a pool that is used as a electronic holding place for money received from illegals and others using false SSNs. Currently estimated at $540 billion. That begs two questions. One, why are they able to work with a false SSN? Two, what is the government doing with that money?
I am aware that some legal, American citizens get false documents for different reasons: identity thefts, running from the law, want to get lost, and for tax invasion. I said legal American citizens, not law-abiding citizens. I am aware that you can ask the SSA for a new one if you have been a victim of identity theft, fraud, or can demonstrate a serious risk of physical harm from others having access to your number. And I am fully aware why illegals get false documents, simply because there are some businesses (although all should be the word used because of the 1986 Immigration Reform and Control Act) that require such documentation to work there. My question would be than why is there not some law in all 50 states and our many territories that require more than seeing the documentation to get the job? Why is there not a database that employers can access to see whether the number was issued by the Social Security Adminstration and a brief description about the person (i.e. age, gender, race)? If a store can instantly check to see if my personal check is any good, why can’t employers do the same for social security numbers?
Now, the government is a “business” in the sense that they are required to show the American people how much money they get, from where, and what it is used for ….”profits and loss”… “an expense sheet”… “a financial report”, because we the American people are the shareholders of said nation.
So I did a little more research on the issue.
Here is the big problem in our government and it stems from we the people. We want our privacy. We don’t what others to see what we are doing, or have the government tell one another about what we make or where it comes from. When we think that someone else is using our number we can’t see what they are using it for, to ensure that it is indeed being used by someone else (credit bureau laws deny request based on the invasion of the other person’s privacy). The banking industry is not allowed to share information with anyone when they came across multiple people using the same SSN. The SSA is not authorized to share your SSN with a “third party” (that would be the employers or other government agencies)… it’s between you and the SSA only. The SSA doesn’t share information on the mismatched names and SSN with the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), Internal Revenue Services (IRS) or the Government Accountability Office (GAO). The same reason is used by all “privacy concerns”.
However, the SSA has created internet options (no limit), telephone hotlines (up to 5) and paperwork (up to 50) that allows employers to verify a SSN. But there is no legislation granting the government the authorization to invade our privacy and share this information with one another when the same number pops up with different names…privacy concerns. They can wiretap us, read our emails, and put surveillance on us… but they can’t check to see if we are who we say we are and match our SSN with the correct person. And there is no legislation that requires that EVERY company, business owner or consultant verify the SSN of an employee, potential employee or consultant used. These types of legislation will probably never go through unless identity theft happens to enough people in power. Why? Because it is easy money for both the government and the businesses and it keeps the prices of things low for the average American citizen.
Businesses want to be able to use the cheap labor, day labor, of the illegals because it ensures that they are able to keep their prices low so that the average American will continue to buy their stuff while lining their pockets with profits. Government agencies are able to collect money that is earmarked for nothing. The IRS collects billions of dollars that it doesn’t have to refund as no tax return is filed. The SSA collects money that sits in an untapped file until the government needs to “borrow it” and then “repay it” at some future time. And the American people are sitting there with untold number of people using their SSN, but hey… their SSN paid into the system, they are legal and one day they will reap the benefits that they didn’t actually pay for.
To put it another way… the liberals in government won’t ask for changes because they are for immigration reform, conservatives won’t request a change because they support cheap labor and corporate profits and the American people won’t beg for the change because characteristically… we want it all!
